The Greatest Salesman in The World – Review

This is one of the first spiritual book I have come across in recent times, which doesn’t talk about renunciation of money, instead gives the tips to be the wealthiest person in the world. Don’t go by the name, the book is not only for people who aspire to be salesman but the wisdom in the book is for all of us to treasure.

The book is artistically written by Og Mandino with great emphasis on creating Arabic scenic experience which if one is able to imagine will feel like seeing a classic Arabic nights story. The story is about nuggets of wisdom which every successful person has or should have. Some of the nuggets I liked are as follows

“ To day I begin a new life shedding the old life which for too long suffered with bruises of sufferings”

“I will greet this day with love in my heart”

“ I will persist until I succeed”

“ I am nature’s greatest miracle”

I will live this day as if it is my last day”

“ Today I will be master of my emotions”

“ I will laugh at the world, for no living creature can laugh except human being”

“ Today I will multiply my value to hundred fold”

“ All is worthless, until my beliefs are not followed by an ACT”

All above tenets may look trivial, but you can always try them and experience the difference.

Overall a good read for the soul…

Some little known Google Facts and Figures

  • Google's name is a play on the word googol, which refers to the number 1 followed by one hundred zeroes. The term was coined by Milton Sirotta, nephew of American mathematician Edward Kasner, and was popularized in the book, "Mathematics and the Imagination" by Kasner and James Newman. Google's play on the term reflects the company's mission to organize the immense amount of information available on the web.
  • Google started as a research project at Stanford University, created by Ph.D. candidates Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were 24 years old and 23 years old respectively (a combined 47 years old).
  • Google's index of web pages is the largest in the world, comprising of billions of web pages. Google searches this immense collection of web pages often in less than half a second.
  • Google receives daily search requests from all over the world, including Antarctica.
  • Users can restrict their searches for content in 35 non-English languages, including Chinese, Greek, Icelandic, Hebrew, Hungarian and Estonian. To date, no requests have been received from beyond the earth's orbit, but Google has a Klingon interface just in case.
  • Google has a world-class staff of more than 2,668 employees known as Googlers. The company headquarters is called the Googleplex.
  • Google translates billions of HTML web pages into a display format for WAP and i-mode phones and wireless handheld devices, and has made it possible to enter a search using only one phone pad keystroke per letter, instead of multiple keystrokes.
  • Google Groups comprises more than 845 million Usenet messages, which is the world's largest collection of messages or the equivalent of more than a terabyte of human conversation.
  • The basis of Google's search technology is called PageRank™, and assigns an "importance" value to each page on the web and gives it a rank to determine how useful it is. However, that's not why it's called PageRank. It's actually named after Google co-founder Larry Page.
  • Googlers are multifaceted. One operations manager, who keeps the Google network in good health is a former neurosurgeon. One software engineer is a former rocket scientist. And the company's chef formerly prepared meals for members of The Grateful Dead and funkmeister George Clinton.

Strategy and tactics for SQUASH...

The fundamental strategy of the game is to hit the ball straight up the side walls to the back corners referred to as a straight drive, wall, or "length", then move to the centre of the court near the "T" to be well placed to retrieve the opponent's return. Attacking with soft or "short" shots to the front corners (referred to as 'drop shots') causes the opponent to cover more of the court and may result in an outright winner. 'Angle' shots (see above) are used for deception and again to cause the opponent to cover more of the court.

Highly skilled players often attempt to finish rallies by hitting the ball at an angle onto the front wall and into an area known as the 'nick' (the junction between the side wall and floor) which if done properly will cause the ball to roll out along the floor and be unreturnable. If the shot misses the nick, however, the ball may bounce out from the side wall and allow the opponent an easy attacking shot.

A key strategy in squash is known as "dominating the T" (the intersection of the red lines near the centre of the court where the player is in the best position to retrieve the opponent's next shot). Skilled players will return a shot, and then move back toward the 'T' before playing the next shot. From this position, the player can quickly access any part of the court to retrieve the opponent's next shot with a minimum of movement.

Rallies between experienced players may involve 30 or more shots and therefore there is a very high premium on fitness, both aerobic and anaerobic. As players become more skilled and, in particular, better able to retrieve shots, points often become a war of attrition. At higher levels of the game, the fitter player has a major advantage.

Almost all players (inexperienced or experienced) will fall into the following categories of style of play:

  • "Retriever"- Usually a very fit player, plays patiently, can retrieve most shots hit by an opponent, but doesn't have a particularly strong attacking game.
  • "Shooter", or "attacking player"- May be a patient player as well, but is more comfortable trying to hit winning shots or going for "nicks". Generally has very good shot accuracy and deception skills.
  • "Power Player"- Tries to overpower their opponent by hitting the ball with extreme pace. Not known for their fitness, or patience.
  • "All-Around Player"- Is comfortable playing all different styles and places, comfortable in all areas of the court.

Ability to change the direction of ball at the last instant is also important to off-balance the opponent. Expert players can anticipate the opponent's shot a few tenths of a second before the average player, giving them a chance to react sooner. Such skill is usually acquired by a lot of practice and game experience.

Freedom: A global perspective

15th August 1947, India got freedom from British Raj. I pondered upon the fact for a while and thought is freedom for a country only means freedom from some other country ruling over it for past many decades? or it has other perspectives.

How can you call a country free, if still that country has not got freedom from poverty, inequality, unemployment and corruption. If we see freedom from this perspective, it has nothing to do with physiological boundaries or what we call different "countries" today. Don't you think that if country is free from all these hassles country is free no matter who is ruling it?

With the world getting flatter, there is a need to see freedom from this perspective because in coming decades the world will be an highly cohesive and interdependent entity. At this time what will matter is a Win-Win situation for all where all have equal opportunities to prosper, wealth is more or less evenly distributed, people have freedom to dream, freedom to act, fairness is at its best and all are working hard to make this world a better place.

I know many economist will think that a how can whole world get prosper at the same time, as the total wealth in the world is more or less constant and gain of one will be loss of others. But I feel that is the challenge to face, that is how we make sure that wealth is uniformly distributed across the globe. I know it is difficult but surely not impossible as the opportunities lying ahead are infinite. sky is the limit.

Comments are always welcome.

A funny teacher's day

This was 5th of September 06, we had our senior’s placements ,everyone was busy with one thing or the other, things were becoming too messy and tense, when Tarun (Hail Col0sseum) told me that I need to go for the teacher’s day and represent our class. This happens when your batch mates feel that you can do some thing or the other to lure audience :). Seeing the demand of the situation I went for the teachers day function, and that too as usual late!. I was sitting on the last seat since I entered from the back door again as usual :). First thought that came to mind was to sit quitely see the function and escape quietly and then I can always fake anything to batch mates that I gave a great speech and all.

But suddenly good RU made an entry and told that its not the matter of me going there giving a vote of thanks ,but the reputation of whole class is at stake; as all the programs will give vote of thanks and how the rocking batch of PGDSM MIT 03 can miss this opportunity.

And here started The struggle............

Like a turtle I some how struggled to make my place in the first 2-3 rows of the auditorium. Everyone was looking at me as if I was some terrorist who is making his way to plant the time bomb :). Do I look like one!! God knows better :). Another big problem was that there was no slot planned for vote of thanks. Now I was looking for that one chance when I can get hold of the mike wish teachers and get away with the thing. One by one my teachers were giving hilarious performances that made me even more nervous. I have heard somewhere that when you are under lot of mental pressure a time comes when you stop thinking about anything. Suddenly fear left my mind and I started enjoying the pressure. And as they say “Happy Go Luck” I got the chance as there happened problem in one of the CD and to fill the gap they asked anyone from the audience to come to the stage and perform anything. This was when I raised my hand and got the chance.

So I started with “My teachers and dear friends a very good afternoon, on the eve of teachers day I on the behalf of PGDSM MIT take this chance to extend my thanks to all the teachers who made our knowledge world even brighter”. Then I thought since I came here to perform something, I should sing something, but no song other than “Huzur is kadar bhi …” was coming to my mind then, so in the spur of moment I said “I want to dedicate a song to my teachers but it has no connection with teacher’s day” there was laughter all around. I sang few lines of the song and the ovation I got was mesmerizing, I thought either they liked the song or they are clapping because they got rid of me :).

Next day I got feedback from the teachers and people from other batch that it was very natural and nice.

So once again PGDSM MIT rocked the stage with a small but a memorable performance…..

One Night @ Call centre Review

The Book "ONE NIGHT @ CALL CENTER" had a tremendous effect on me. It has only enhanced my faith in the idea that instead of wasting life's precious time in

doing what you dont want to do, Its better to be honest with oneself and speculate What is actually you want to do when you are alive? Definitely the path

chosen by your heart is full of risks, but this the only path which will give you immnse pleasure and satisfaction. So go ahead, even an ordinary man with

simple life can do extraordinary things, if he believes in himself and his dreams. These things are generally realised by the people when they are near to

death, then only they think that they have wasted all there life in doing things they never wanted to , to make money that will not go with them, to please

people they dont like.

According to the book four main ingredients for success are

1. Intelligence

2. Imagination

3. Self Confidence

4. Ability to face Failures

The first two are very common attributes that most of us have. But the last two are possesed by very few.

Once you dare to face failure "head on" then only you will feel a sense of freedom with in you. Then only you will start to follow your dreams without any

fear of failure and then only the real talent in you will come out.

Most of the book is full of crap and ordinary things like date with your girlfriend, break off and other petty things. But the last two chapters makes it a

winner overall. It is full of wisdom. It describes an incident where one sudden accident, and then a call from god . how changes life( in full mess) of six

persons.

So the main idea of book can be summarised in one sentence as:-

"Follow your dreams, without fear of failling, becoz dreams come true"

Go ahead a good reading for the soul....

For my Childhood Friends

FRIENDS FOREVER
Listening to the song and contemplating those good old days....

When we were together, blossoming in the heat of the days....

There was fun there was thrill....

Life looked like a daffodil....

Party in ICH, party at gk....

Motu(Parag) and I never ate like that any other day....

Cricket was on the mind...

Viru and me use to always whine...

That laughing of Pranav's out of the reason....

Which let my worries go in heaven..

Those 2 coins in Praveen's pocket

Which till today he has never pot....:)

That running to the Moti's house on a single call...

That behavin like a typical bro on the topics of pyar...

That coolness of Mr. Birju....

Which i can never think for me though....

That hasty cake cuttin arranged by Trupti...

Those love affairs i shared with my would be....

There are hundreds of those moments yet to be written.....

They are enough to make my life enlighten....

There was passion, there was love....

There were fights there were conflict.....

but we remain together all the while...

Wish i could device time machine write now....

To go into those good old days now....

Becoz those were the best days of my life.....

For my love...."THOU"

“THOU”

When life is rocking and there is fun all around, whom I think of is thou……

When this heart wants to celebrate, I miss someone that’s thou……..

When I am lost in this vicious circle of life, the hand I want to hold is of thou……

When heart denies trusting anybody the person on whom I want to trust is thou……

When life is lonely and down, person to whom I want to talk is thou……

When this world looks so dark, I see a ray of light coming from a person that’s thou…

The one who I know understands me the best is thou……..

The one who cares for me more than the rest is thou…..

Most of the time, about whom I am thinking of is thou…..

This life looks incomplete without someone that’s thou….

I don’t want to loose someone on any cost that’s thou…….

An Angel send by god for me that is thou….

Neither money nor fame all in vain if I am not with the same…..

So, today I feel confident enough to say from the bottom of my heart that I Love You….

Do you love me in the same way as I do……..

My Leader...My Mom

I feel myself obliged to have my Mother (aai in marathi) as a leader who has influenced me the most. Right from child hood to the date, she has done many things, which have an everlasting impact on me. I would like to explain these on the basis of following mentioned points

Sacrifice:
When I was a child (2nd Std to be precise) my father got a transfer from Gwalior (maternal uncle’s place) to Indore. I was very much attached to my maternal uncle and grandmother and vice versa. Due to which there was resistance from both the sides to not let me go from there. My mother understood the situation well and despite of all opposition from others allowed me to stay their. This was the act of sacrifice had an impact on me that made me realized that at some points in life, to make your loved one's happy you might have to sacrifice.

Determination:
When I and my brother were kids we were having a Luna (Moped). She use to take both of us on that to the school then she use to go to her office. The condition of moped was pathetic it use to get stopped frequently, moreover on steep roads we have to take it up in hand, despite all this she never felt tired or broke her heart and continued taking us on Luna till we were not mature enough to run bicycles. This gives me a feeling that roads of life are not always smooth there are up and downs, there will be times when you have to mere stop and watch but the one who never loose determination reaches school (destination) on time.

Vision:
I could sense the vision of my mother that her most valuable assets are her children and she has to make them leaders in all aspects of life whether it is sports, interpersonal skills or education. She never told me but I know that she has spent all her savings in education of me and my brother. She wanted to make us good in all areas of life so never hesitated in spending money and time on education, sports or cultural activities. This gives me a feeling that it is necessary to have vision and one should never hesitate in spending time or money to achieve that vision or dream.

Freedom of expression ,Trust and adaptability:
My mother never restricted us on expressing our ideas on anything and always kept her mind open to good ideas. She never forced us to follow god or do any religious activities but told us the importance of them and left the choice to us.
When I was in love with this girl (whom I am going to marry now J ) I was very hesitant in saying that to my mother but some how she got the idea that something is fishy and herself asked me to say whatever there is in my mind. She got shocked for a moment but quickly responded by saying the words that I can never forget “We trust you and we know that whatever decision you have taken must be good for you and your family”. Being from a conservative family I was really surprised to see the changing attitude of my mother (and father too :-)). Above incidents of life made me realize that freedom of expression is must, to avoid any kind of misconception or hidden hatred, at the same time it is very important to trust the people with whom you are living with and make them realize that you trust them, this make the bond even stronger.
Change is rule of life, it is very important to get accustomed to the change and keep mind open for new ideas which makes life pretty easy and enjoy full.

There is old theory which says leaders are born but I say difficult situations give person a choice to be a leader, of which my mother is perfect example.
Apart from the above points I am still in the process of discovering the potential of my mother, I always draw inspiration and take suggestion from her.
I feel happy to utilize this platform to pen down the points I have never spoken to anybody about my mother(not even her). Mom you are great.

“ Maa tujhe salam”
